The European Food Safety Authority is urging Maltese experts in the field to sign up to its database that would allow them to pool their expertise across the globe when needed.

So far the authority has received seven applications from Maltese experts wanting to sign up to the database, which has so far attracted 2,810 applications from European food experts, EFSA representative Bernhard Berger said.

The aim is to have a clear and transparent list of experts in food safety across the globe who could support the research and work carried out by the EFSA. The authority aims to ensure a high level consumer protection and maintain confidence in the EU food supply.

The fields of expertise needed range from food and feed safety to animal and plant health and animal welfare and nutrition.

Mr Berger was speaking during a seminar for Maltese experts held at the Corinthia Hotel, Attard.
