New phase of Salini rehabilitation: old huts to be rebuilt
The Salini marshland.
Mepa has granted an outline permit for the next phase of the government's Salini rehabilitation project which will see the partial demolition, reconstruction and rehabilitation of the existing salt structures, the building of a car park, a visitors' centre, and the rehabilitation and change of use of the Ximenes Redoubt as an interpretation centre.
The project also involves the reinstatement of the marshland and the garigue area and the creation of a number of bird observation posts. A ferry boat jetty will also be built.
The old wooden storage sheds will be replaced by structures on the same site, replicating the original, which have deteriorated too much to be restored.
However the packing shed, which is in better condition, is to be restored and the materials and techniques will be replicated where necessary.
An archaeologist will monitor works in the area to safeguard any archaeological remains that might be uncovered.
An underpass will be created between the visitors' centre and the site.

All around the Salini has become very attractive, BUT, will somebody in charge tell the Vegetables seller on the corner to brighten his selling point? It could be made so attractive and would enhance the area plus his sales so much. Thanks.

The whole area: Salini, Kennedy Grove and the Park are so peaceful and enjoyable throughout the day thanks to the cleaning, upgrading, tree-planting, garden furniture including the functional and clean fountains. Thanks also to the care and attention being given by the management and the employees.
Keep it up!
PS In the long sunny period, one needs to ensure that each new plant has its share of drip irrigation. At times irrigation pipes, and "drippers" attached to them, are accidentally hit by children or pets and moved away from the plants. We, who enjoy the place, can assist too in this little task by moving back the pipes close to the plants without waiting for the Park employees to notice and take appropriate action.

Well done. This is indeed good news. The site is unique. I have lived in Salina for the
last 30 odd years and remember watching the female salt pickers in their colourful
scarves and black boots working at night under flood lights. So evocative.
Prosit and lets hope the job is done carefully and tastefully.

I'm pleased to hear that the old wooden storage sheds will be rebuilt as I always enjoyed this specific site. The Salini salt pans remind me of my childhood on the way to Mellieha.

Yes, and from there a sweet panorama is visible looking at the opposite site that is Qawra.
A lot of shabby wooden+corrugated sheets rooms are built there without any permission.
Remind me of ghettos in India and Pakistan!

...and you forgot to mention the eyesore flats lining the road above them! At least this site will prevent people looking that far because there will be more to occupy the eye...

Good work.......many,many ,years ago that area was used as a port.So if dreging is going to take place in the marshland special care must be taken so that anythig buried in the mud..,silt, will not be destroyed.
