A man was yesterday accused of paying for construction material with two cheques from an account that had been closed for six years.

Giuseppe Abela, 47, pleaded not guilty to defrauding Newco Steel Ltd from which he had bought nets and other construction material for about €4,000.

He made the purchase last November and allegedly paid the company with two cheques from his former wife's account which had been closed since 2004.

Mr Abela was also charged with misappropriation and breaching the conditions of a previous release. Police Inspector Maurice Curmi prosecuted. Lawyers Franco Debono and Marion Camilleri appeared for the accused.
