The vice president of Vittoriosa Stars FC has been handed down an 18-month jail term suspended for three years and fined €2,000 for bribing players of a rival team.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke found Emanuel Ancilleri, 54, guilty of bribing two players of Cospicua's St George's FC to throw the game during a Division One match against his team, Vittoriosa Stars, in December 2008.

This judgment follows that involving the two players, who last November were given suspended jail terms and fined €500 each after they admitted to accepting the brides. Vittoriosa had won that match 3-2.

St George's FC goalkeeper Andrea Gatt, 29, was jailed for one year suspended for four while player Lawrence Mizzi, 28, was given an 18-month jail term also suspended for four.

Police Inspector Angelo Gafà prosecuted. Lawyer Edward Gatt appeared for Mr Ancilleri, who is expected to appeal the judgment.
