It seems that George Portelli (The Sunday Times, February 14) did not have all the facts to hand regarding ustralia Hall.

Australia Hall was transferred to the Labour Party (PL) in the 1970s when the party had transferred the Freedom ress property in Marsa to government so that it could be used by Malta Shipbuilding.

Regaining Australia Hall thus means that the Labour Party will have given property to the State without receiving adequate compensation or, even worse, forfeit property transferred as compensation.

One wonders why Parliamentary Secretary Jason Azzopardi is using up so much energy to take away Australia Hall from the PL when the government is not conserving the historical sites it already has in hand such as Fort St Angelo, Fort St Elmo, Fort Ricasoli.

According to a recent party statement, the PL has applied to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority to restore Australia Hall, a project I am looking forward to.

It is only fair to ask whether Mr Portelli is proposing that government returns to the PL the property it had acquired from the party in the 1970s if it takes possession of Australia Hall.
