Manchester City ended their run of seven league draws in spectacular fashion by beating English Premier League leaders Chelsea 2-1 in an action-packed game in front of a record Eastlands crowd on Saturday.

Chelsea led with an early Emmanuel Adebayor own goal but the Togo striker equalised late in the first half. Carlos Tevez put City ahead with a 56th-minute freekick and Shay Given kept them there by saving Frank Lampard's penalty eight minutes from time.

Chelsea's third defeat of the season cuts their lead to two points over Manchester United, who won 4-0 at Portsmouth. Arsenal are third, eight points off the pace, after a 2-0 home win over Stoke City, while Manchester City are up to sixth on 25 points, 11 behind the leaders.

Bottom club Portsmouth got their first win under Avram Grant beating Burnley 2-0, while relegation rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers and Birmingham City also recorded important victories.

Carlo Ancelotti's Chelsea side can restablish their five-point gap over United with a win at Manchester City today's late match.
