Melita Mobile officially began its operation on Sunday, after announcing call rates up to 30 per cent cheaper than the competition.
The operation boasts full services, nationwide coverage and international roaming services.
Charges on the Melita Mobile network are based on one single call rate, at any time and any day to any fixed or mobile local network. Melita Mobile Pay Monthly plans start at €15 - the monthly subscribtion fee can be used against any mobile service, not just voice calls. A selection of free 3G mobile phones is available for subscribers switching to Melita Mobile.
Pre-paid plans on Melita Mobile have no time window and no time limit for usage. Additionally, monthly mobile tariff plans bind customers for a shorter period than the current practice - 15 months as opposed to 24.
Subscribers who switch to Melita Mobile this month will also receive one free month of mobile usage to all local numbers, a free 3G mobile phone, and free credit when topping up.
After promising a "cheaper, better, simpler" mobile service for weeks, the plans were finally unveiled by Melita's chief operations officer Stephen Wright in Valletta on Saturday.
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi inaugurated Melita's new mobile service. Symbolically, Dr Gonzi received the first call on Melita Mobile on number 77 00 00 01, from Massimo Pisani, Melita's lead video editor, as Malta Communications Authority executive chairman Philip Micallef and Melita managers looked on.
Mr Wright explained that with all four services (mobile, digital TV, fixed telephony and internet) under one roof, Melita is offering savings to all its customers, simple and more transparent tariffs and better services. Besides great savings on mobile services, Melita is also an opportunity for customers to benefit from additional savings when using more than one of Melita's services.
