Green Dot Malta has finalised a scheme which enables it to collect and recycle electrical and electronic waste for industry. This important facility within the waste stream means that industry is finally provided with an infrastructure to recycle equipment as required by the European Union's Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive. The directive penalises Malta unless companies trading in such products meet targets to recycle 2,000 of WEEE.

The scheme, called WEEE Recycle and specifically tailor-made for industry, will recover computers, electronic toys and white goods, such as fridges, ovens and washing machines among others, from the waste stream. The targets for companies to recycle electrical goods are defined by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority.

Green Dot Malta follows the GreenPak scheme which over the past five years has been recovering packaging waste for member companies which would otherwise lack the infrastructure to recycle their waste according to their obligations.

"Companies may be well-meaning in waste disposal but unless they are serviced with the right infrastructure to meet the obligatory recycling targets, these cannot be met," said Mario Schembri, CEO of Green Dot Malta. "With the backing of other European national systems, we are the market leaders in the field and have the necessary know-how to ensure a successful WEEE compliance scheme at minimal costs."

Green Dot Malta WEEE Recycle Scheme is led by business development manager Edgar Chircop. Mr Chircop is known in the business sector having served for many years at the Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise.
