Enforcement officers tackle cheeky abuser
Enforcement officers from the Government Property Division this morning started demolishing a room built illegally on government land within shouting distance of the offices of the Government Property Division.
The room was built on the rocks below the bastions of Fort St Elmo in Valletta, a short distance away from the GPD offices at the Auberge de Baviere.
It was served with an enforcement notice by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) some time ago.
The GPD earlier this week also evicted squatters from Fort St Elmo.

It is suggested that its better to light a candle than complaining about darkness. While constructive critism has its positive aspects, preferably this must be complemented by positive action againsty any abuse.
The Govt. Property Divison has set up a "24-hour, seven days a week freephone service to be used to report abuse of public property, even anonymously.
Freephone 1577 is being launched together with a website, www.1577.gov.mt, to inform the public on how to go about reporting abuse and what actually constitutes abuse of government land and property. ........ and those making use of the service must be sure they are reporting the abuse of public, not private, property, stressed Dr Azzopardi."
So I beleive that it is better if we are be pro-active and use this newly set up service against abuse on public land insead of just moaning ontehpast . I have tried it and it really works..

So just the one illegal room on government land deserves a mention in the newspaper, but no one does anything about the hundreds of illegally built rooms on public land... such a sad country

Are the culprits made to pay the costs for the demolition?

@ J Farrugia. GPD Enforcement officers were doing a sterling job for many years, they just didn't get the publicity they are receiving now. I know because they collaborated with me on various evictions during my time as an E.O with the Social Housing Dept.
The energetic Parl. Sectr. Dr Jason Azzopardi has set eviction from Govt. owned property a priority in his agenda and is giving the EO his full backing.
Hopefully he will not have interference when it comes to big shots and other untouchables! Keep up the Good Work as law abiding citizens are all behind you.

But excuse me ... the GPD was there for these last tens of years. And yet no enforcement was ever carried out. So the Directors of the GPD should be held accountable for not doing their duties. It had to be the Parl. Sec Jason Azzopardi to kick the back of the GPD to take action. Hats off to JA. But still I would like to see this PS kick the back of those responsible for this lack of enforcement. When shall we see it? They were as much responsible as these abusers.

We shouldn't just demolish such structures. We should charge the occupier / culprit a rent for the time the land was occupied.

And where were the Government Property Division enforcement officers while this room was being built right under their noses ... or did it crop up during the night like some mushroom!!

The building of an illegal room close to the Property Division Offices is not cheeky at all. It just shows the contempt that these people hold for our law enforcement as they would normally get away with it or have it sanctioned after they "talked to someone".
