Bank of Valletta is to distribute American Express-branded cards in Malta from early next year.

BoV is the first American Express Global Network Services partner to hold an acquiring license in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) territories and has had a license agreement with American Express since 2003.

Bank chief executive officer Tonio Depasquale said: "By combining the strengths of the two brands, we can offer customers increased choice and a wider range of benefits and services to suit their specific needs."

American Express Company is a leading global payments, network and travel company founded in 1850. Since 1996, American Express has been pursuing a strategy geared towards opening its network and its credit card portfolio to third party issuers all over the world, through its Global Network Services division.

American Express GNS has entered into 124 strategic alliances to issue cards in 125 markets.
