The European Consumer Centre (Malta) forms part of the European Consumer Centres Network (ECCs) with offices throughout the EU member states. This network is there to help with any questions consumers may have concerning their activities as consumers in the EU. The objective is to achieve a situation where consumers feel as confident shopping throughout the EU as they do in their country of residence.

The European Internal Market can offer consumers an increased choice and better value for money. The aim of ECC-Net is to ensure a certain level of protection when purchasing in this market. The ECC seeks to achieve its objectives by providing information to consumers and offering assistance on cross-border complaints and disputes and encouraging the development of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) schemes.

Should a consumer have a complaint concerning a cross-border purchase, he is encouraged to contact the trader first. He is then advised to forward all the details of his complaint to the European Consumer Centre (Malta) if he does not obtain a remedy.

The ECC then shares the case with the ECC of the trader's country, which in turn contacts the trader and aims at reaching a solution. Although it does not have enforcement powers, the ECC network's purpose is to mediate between the parties.

ECC-Net Malta also handles local complaints by EU nationals residing in other member states who have carried out transactions in Malta. They are advised to contact the ECC of their respective country of residence, which in turn shares the case with ECC-Net Malta. The service is free of charge.
