A second round of voting to elect the Labour Party’s new deputy leaders will have to be held this afternoon after no candidate achieved an absolute majority in the first round of voting yesterday.

A total of 850 votes were cast of which, in both cases, six votes were invalid or counted as abstentions. Candidates needed to achieve a majority of 50% plus one (423 votes) in order to be declared elected.

Mosta lawyer Anglu Farrugia won most votes in the election for deputy leader (parliamentary affairs) winning 409 votes, while another lawyer, Toni Abela came first in the poll for deputy leader (party affairs) with 390 votes.

They will face Chris Cardona and Gavin Gulia who came runners-up in the two elections respectively.

The results were:

Deputy leader for parliamentary affairs: Carmelo Abela 190; Chris Cardona 245 and Anglu Farrugia 409.

Deputy leader for party affairs: Toni Abela 390; Joe Clyde Cassar, 10; Gavin Gulia 295 and Joe Mifsud, 149.

A recount had to be held since the results, when added, did not tally to the votes cast, by just one vote.
