Colombia's government criticised as "hurtful" a new song from French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy's new album for a reference one song makes to Colombian cocaine.

The album, titled "As If Nothing Had Happened," has yet to be released, but contains one song with the lyrics: "You are my drug. More lethal than heroin from Afghanistan and more dangerous than Colombian cocaine," according to French newspaper Le Figaro.

"Since this is coming from the mouth of the president's wife, we consider this statement very hurtful to Colombia," said Foreign Minister Fernando Araujo. "These kinds of things happen when you mix politics with art; we deeply regret it."

Araujo himself was kidnapped for six years by Colombia's FARC rebels, who use funds from the cocaine trade to finance their four-decade-old insurgency. Colombia is the world's largest producer of cocaine.

The album is Bruni's third since turning from top model to musician, and her first since she married French President Nicolas Sarkozy in February.

France is involved in efforts to try to broker an agreement to free former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, a citizen of both France and Colombia who has been held hostage by the FARC for more than five years.

"Instead of offering an apology for consuming, we hope that the whole world joins us in the fight against drugs," Araujo said.
