Members of the Malta police Sirene branch, which forms part of the force's International Relations Unit, have benefited from TAIEX funds to visit Sirene offices in other European countries.

TAIEX, which is the technical assistance and exchange instrument of the European Commission, provides short-term assistance to the new EU member states.

Sirene officers are responsible for running the Schengen Information System which came into force last September.

Through these visits, officers familiarise themselves with the system as run in other states.

Last year, 16 officers from the local Sirene office took part in six such visits in Rome, Stockholm and Vienna. Four other officers are expected to visit the office in Rome this month while another six will visit the Luxembourg office.

TAIEX programmes end in April.
