There are many factors which contribute to several problems in teens' lives. These vary from low self-esteem, peer pressure, stress and lack of motivation.

Teens living in these times find it cooler to stay in front of the computer, playing games, watch several hours of television and other activities, which all consist of just sitting down; therefore there is no movement of the body. This is a very serious problem, even if it doesn't seem so, especially for the teens. They are at risk of to becoming obese. An obese person has a large amount of extra body fat, not just a few extra pounds.

People who are obese are very overweight and at risk of serious health problems. Young people like to eat a lot of snacks, all containing a lot of calories. The body only needs a certain amount of calories every day and if this amount gets higher the calories are turned into fat. This extra amount of weight in the body, which in turn leads to becoming obese, doesn't happen in a few weeks or months. Obesity is a long process and people who are obese in fact have gained a lot of fat during the past years.

Sometimes emotions contribute to obesity. People tend to eat more when they feel upset, anxious or stressed. Then they realise that they ate a lot and they eat more to deal with those bad feelings. And has anyone asked what these young people eat when they feel this way? It's surely not fruit or vegetables, but chocolate, packets of snacks, ice cream and tons of food that is not good for their health.

The lifestyle which we are now living is an important factor that contributes to obesity. Young people are much less active today than they used to be, filling their spare time with all the electronics like televisions, computers and playstations, instead of going for a walk in the countryside. We are currently living a busy life - a life in which we need to hurry to get all the things done. As time gets less, people don't have time to cook healthy meals, so they eat at restaurants or buy take-away foods. These are all harmful, especially if young people make this a habit. All of these can contain lots more fat and calories than meals prepared from fresh foods at home.

We are dominated by cars nowadays, so young people tend to find it easier to go by car instead of walking a short distance.

About 1.2 billion people in the world are overweight and at least 300 million of them are obese, even though obesity is one of the 10 most preventable health risks, according to the World Health Organisation. Obesity is bad news for both body and mind. Not only does it make a person feel tired and uncomfortable, it can wear down joints and put extra stress on other parts of the body. With this article I'm not saying not to go to restaurants, stay in front of the computer or travel by car. I'm only trying to show what could happen if all the factors that I talked about become a habit. Remember, the more you exercise and eat healthy food, like fruit and vegetables, the more you live! If young people get this into their heads, then they will become healthy adults!
