Kavallieri York Cisk 28
Stompers TGI Fridays 17

Kavallieri looked the better prepared team for this top-of-the-table clash, sending out a clear warning to their rivals that they will be serious contenders for the honours.

New team variations, angled bursts and fine timing, coupled with accurate passing, kept Stompers on the back foot throughout the first half which finished 18-0 for Kavallieri.

Kavallieri imposed territorial pressure right from the start. From a trademark forward drive, fly-half Roderick Attard skipped into a huge gap for the first try, which he converted.

Good Kavallieri marking kept Stompers' backs at bay as Attard was having his best ever match.

Experienced left-winger Mark Hutchenson has added an extra facet to Kavallieri and with full-back Pierre Micallef and right-wing Emanuel Lautier it looks as if the club have at last found the right men to complement their formidable forwards.

From a Kavallieri maul following a line-out, captain Daniel Grima scored the next try, after which Attard added two penalties.

The rampant Kavallieri started the second half by stretching Stompers' defence from side to side.

But then, a long clearance into the Kavallieri half scrambled untidily into touch. Malcolm Attard reacted quickly with a quick throw-in and suddenly Stompers were showing their true potential.

Forward pressure, good passing and loop support by captain Patrick Satariano put Luke Debattista over for the first Stompers try.

But, Kavallieri hit back and David Borg barged in for a try.

Kavallieri started to throw the ball around and attacked yet again but grew careless.

Malcolm Attard pounced on a loose ball and ran in an opportunist try from some 70 metres, converted by Satariano.

Stompers won a good ball, Satariano made a half break and offloaded to Attard to score another fine try.

Stompers were sniffing a comeback but Kavallieri's experience came to the fore. They imposed their play and forward pressure which resulted in a final try by Malta international Jason Ramage.

Man of the match: Roderick Attard (Kavallieri).

Referee: Donald Hewer.

Women's tournament

Moscow Regional Representative side, Khimki, won a Sevens tournament at Marsa last weekend.

Khimki beat Sharks Saddles, 19-7, Panthers Huggins, 53-0, and Kavallieri York Cisk Excel, 15-7.

Kavallieri lost Esther Azzopardi, their best runner, to a nasty cut in her leg. Her presence might have made a difference, especially as Kavallieri had just enjoyed a morale boosting win over Sharks, 19-0.
