Maltese veteran cueman Tony Drago helped Europe to win the 2007 Mosconi Cup last weekend with an 11-8 triumph over the United States in Las Vegas.

Ralf Souquet, the most experienced player on the European side, sealed victory with a 6-4 success over Rodney Morris on Sunday.

The visitors had only won the prestigious pool tournament, equivalent to golf's Ryder Cup, twice in the previous 13 years and had to fight back from a 4-1 deficit on the opening day, but managed to do so in style by winning ten of the next 14 matches.

There were incredible scenes in Studio B of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas as Souquet sunk the final 9-ball. Immediately, the rest of the European team rushed on to the stage to celebrate.

Within seconds, Drago, who was later presented with the Most Valuable Player Award, hoisted Souquet high in the air and as the other players rushed in, the whole group ended up in a big pile on the floor.

But this showed what it meant to win this competition and the players were absolutely ecstatic at securing a rare victory in this, one of the most popular pool competitions of the year.

Tempers boiled over in the third and fourth days in Las Vegas as Drago nearly came to blows with volatile American Earl Strickland.

Souquet had defeated Strickland but there were some ugly scenes as the German celebrated his victory with his team-mates and then went over to shake his opponent's hand. However, Strickland hurled abuse at Souquet and threw his hand away from him.

That led to an angry exchange as Drago screamed at Strickland, who was being booed by the crowd, before someone, either a European competitor or fan, threw a dummy at the US player.

The match had been threatening to boil over as with the score at 5-3, just as Strickland was about to shoot he looked up at Souquet and said "you're more lucky than you are good".

The US looked like they were racing away with the competition after leading 4-1 at the end of Thursday as bookmakers priced them at 1-20 to win the tournament again.

But Europe had obviously not read the script as a collection of stunning performances saw them move 5-4 in front in this first to 11 contest.

However, US ended the second day on a high as Rodney Morris and Strickland scraped a hard-fought 6-5 victory in a doubles encounter with Daryl Peach and Souquet.

Friday's play began with reigning world champion Peach and veteran Souquet winning 6-0 over Strickland and Shane Van Boening.

Drago, who had endured a miserable opening day, won two singles matches for Europe, against Rodney Morris and then Van Boening, while the team of Konstantin Stepanov and Niels Feijen were successful in the other match versus Corey Deuel and Johnny Archer.
