I want to thank Pauline Dingli of the MTA for her information on the upkeep of the Girgenti caves complex (June 20).

The fact remains that these caves are very hard to find and signs need to be placed to direct people to the area. Many also do know not where the cart ruts and Roman quarries are. A board with a map of the area would definitely help.

We revisited the site and met some local and foreign visitors who were "lost" and we had to direct them to the caves and to the cart ruts near the Roman quarries. On our way out, we saw a local who was giving directions to the caves complex to two foreign visitors.

With reference to extensive cleaning and the restoration of rubble walls that has taken place mostly "above and around the caves" as Ms Dingli mentioned, please be aware that the inside of the caves complex requires cleaning.

We want to take advantage of this situation to thank Keith Buhagiar for the interesting info that he posted on the internet thus making us appreciate more the beauty of these archaeological caves.

We have circulated Dr Buhagiar's website to several locals and Maltese emigrants abroad along with the photos that we took. We are surprised that the majority are not aware of the caves complex.

Although they were very proud of this heritage, they were very disappointed about its current state.
