The crew of the sailing boat Elusive, skippered by Arthur Podestà, has won the Biological Conservation Research Foundation (Bicref) and Rolex Middle Sea Race (RMSR) Best Dolphin and Whale Sighting Records award.

Bicref said that the RMSR again contributed to the collection of valuable data on dolphin and whale sightings along its path of 607 nautical miles.

To promote the conservation research and awareness of these vulnerable species in the Mediterranean, Bicref gave sighting folders and disposable cameras to every participating yacht. Crew members are rewarded for the best detailed information and photos of every dolphin and whale sighting.

Bicref said it has been running this project with the collaboration of Royal Malta Yacht Club since 2000 and appreciates the increasing dedication and interest shown by the crews.

The information is for the Cetacean Scientific Field Research Project launched by conservation biologist Adriana Vella in 1996.
