Spanish rider Sete Gibernau will miss out on the season-ending Valencian MotoGP following his crash in last weekend's race in Portugal.

The 33-year-old Ducati rider, who has had a disappointing season and lies 12th in the championship, underwent surgery on a broken bone in his hand and on the collarbone he damaged in a crash earlier in the season.

The Portuguese GP could turn out to be Gibernau's last race for Ducati as he has not agreed a new contract for next season and Australian rider Casey Stoner has been linked with a move to join Loris Capirossi at the Italian team.

The Valencia race, which takes place on October 29, will witness the climax to the duel between Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden for this year's world title.

Five-times MotoGP and 500cc champion Rossi has an eight-point advantage over Hayden after his second place in Portugal. The American failed to finish the race after crashing out when Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa skidded into him as the two riders entered a bend trying to chase down Rossi.
