The Department of Pharmacy was a partner in an Erasmus Intensive Programme co-ordinated by the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. The other partners were National Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece and the University College of Cork, Ireland.
The Intensive Programme was a 10-day course on how to combat viral infections where 40 students from the Schools of Pharmacy of Leuven, Malta, Athens and Cork participated.
Ten students following an undergraduate course at the Department of Pharmacy participated at the intensive programme.
The programme took into consideration HIV and Hepatitis C infection.
During the programme students worked in groups on different projects, such as the development and optimisation of a method to determine solubility of a novel antiviral agent, the design of stabilised Tar decoy as a potential anti-HIV agent and the development of controlled release drug delivery systems based on silica.
Maltese faculty members who lectured in the programme were Dr Christopher Barbara, Dr Lilian M. Azzopardi and Professor Anthony Serracino-Inglott.
