The Malta Institute of Taxation is starting its second diploma course in taxation in October. The brochure containing the syllabus and regulations for the 2006/2007 course will be available on the MIT Website www.maintax.org by the end of this month.

The Diploma Course in Taxation is one of the most important educational activities of the institute. Since its foundation in 1995, the Malta Institute of Taxation has considered the enhancement of education on taxation matters to be one of its main objectives.

Course lectures are held on Thursdays between 6 and 8 p.m. between October and June at the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) at the University of Malta, kindly made available for the course by its director. The course is run by experienced lecturing staff, most of whom are leading authorities on taxation in Malta.

The application form, which will be annexed to the course brochure, may be filled in and submitted with the necessary supporting documentation and processing fee within the stipulated time.

"We are currently running the first diploma course for 40 graduates who have been selected from among 250. Their progress is constantly monitored through questionnaires and we have received favourable feedback," said Edwin Vella, president of the Malta Institute of Taxation.

"We are pleased to note that participation in our educational activities has been recognised by other major institutes in Malta as qualifying for their own educational requirements," Mr Vella added.

"We are also working on running new courses specialised in international taxation in conjunction with other international taxation institutes"

The Institute of Taxation publishes its own Guide to the Tax Cases. It has also taken in hand the publication of all tax cases (both Income Tax and VAT), which contain updated important expressions of judicial opinion.

The institute, in conjunction with the revenue departments, has already published four volumes covering Income Tax cases and two volumes covering VAT cases. The final two volumes which will be published later this year will bring the publication of all decided tax cases right up to date.

The institute holds at least three public lectures a year on current developments in taxation. It also actively participates in seminars and meetings of the Confederation Fiscale Europeenne (CFE) which represents most of the taxation institutes in Europe.

The CFE is one of the bodies consulted by the European Union whenever taxation issues are on its agenda.
