The total industry turnover index increased by 26.39 per cent from 86.14 in January 2003 to 108.87 in January this year, according to provisional data issued by the National Statistics Office.

The employment index decreased by 1.89 per cent and the wages and salaries index by 1.20 per cent.

The capital goods group registered a drop of 9.97 per cent in the turnover index in January compared to the same month last year.

In the same period, this group showed a 9.75 per cent increase in its employment index.

Its wages and salaries index increased by 7.67 per cent.

The turnover index of the consumer durable goods group increased by 71.57 per cent. For the same period, this sector registered a decrease of 29.77 per cent in the employment index.

The wages and salaries index decreased from 137.19 per cent to 96.52 per cent.

The consumer non-durable goods group registered an increase of 3.65 per cent in the turnover index during the same period.

Its employment index decreased from 95.36 to 90.25 per cent. In the same period, the group wages and salaries index dropped from 102.11 to 94.23.

The turnover index of the energy group decreased by 0.94 per cent over while its employment index increased by 16.31 per cent. The wages and salaries index registered a fall of 0.59 per cent.

The intermediate goods group's turnover index increased by 43.52 per cent while the employment index registered a fall of 3.65 per cent. Its wages and salaries index increased to 106.45 per cent from 96.35 per cent.
