The Labour Party's spokesman for public function, Helena Dalli, yesterday condemned the "irresponsible attitude" of the government in negating its responsibility to keep the shipyards open and obtain the best results possible.

Reacting to comments made by Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi in an interview published by The Times on Monday, Ms Dalli said the MLP was not yet convinced that the outline restructuring plan would lead to economic and financial viability and meet the obligations that the government had committed itself to with the European Union.

Dr Gonzi had said that if the 'yard failed as a result of disputes, 1,600 workers would lose their jobs.

Ms Dalli said the MLP will continue to insist on seeing the 'yard's financial accounts for 2002 and 2003.
