Woman jailed for cocaine smuggling

An English woman of Nigerian origin was yesterday jailed for three years and fined Lm2,000 for importing cocaine into Malta.

Vivien Hazel Akharele Enahoro, 41, pleaded guilty to cocaine importation, trafficking and conspiracy on and before November 20, 2002.

She had been arraigned with Jean Agius, 57, of Attard, who is pleading not guilty to cocaine conspiracy and trafficking.

Enahoro filed a guilty plea on April 9 after the Attorney General sent the case against her and Agius to be tried summarily before the Magistrates' Court. The magistrate ordered that the time Enahoro spent in preventive custody be deducted from her jail term and that she be deported after serving time.

She also ordered the confiscation and destruction of the cocaine but stayed the execution of the order until Agius's case is decided.

Police Inspector Neil Harrison prosecuted.

Dr Peter Fenech appeared for Enahoro while Dr John Attard Montalto and Dr Ian Farrugia appeared for Agius.
