Appreciation: Monsignor Maurice Grech

by Margaret Bianchi

Fr Maurice died last Saturday at 3 p.m. He rests and we mourn. It is his gain and our loss. He was a very special priest, a holy man of God.

One mission entrusted to him was that of giving direction to some wandering sheep from among the English-speaking community. This he did with the finesse of a weathered fisherman. He set up a number of prayer groups and it is as a member of one of his groups that I am writing.

His manner of being was a reflection of Jesus Himself. He loved us all; he was compassionate and kind; he challenged us to grow spiritually; he corrected wrong attitudes; he understood our human weaknesses and assured us of our dignity and security because we are God's children.

He was a priest who believed in the redeeming power of suffering. For the entire duration of his priestly life, he suffered incredible physical pain - migraines and insomnia were constant, and in his later years his visits to the hospital and specialists were never-ending.

He considered his cross a gift and a privilege, and never complained. He understood suffering, accepted it and used it as a powerful tool of grace to touch the lives of all those he loved and prayed for.

This token expression of my affection for Fr Maurice would be incomplete if I did not mention his great love for Our Lady. I shall remember with nostalgia the many occasions when he would bring out his rosary beads and invite me to join him in saying three Hail Marys.

On behalf of all the members of the prayer groups he started, I would like to extend our deepest sympathy to his family.
