An international conference on urban regeneration will be held at the Corinthia San Gorg Hotel, St Julian's, from next Sunday to Tuesday, April 15.

Organised by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA), the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), and the World Urban Development Forum (INTA), the conference will bring together key players in the field of urban regeneration from Europe, the Mediterranean, the Near East, the US and Canada.

Urban planners, economists, tourism planners, sociologists, architects, conservators, transport planners and local officials with a direct interest in urban regeneration, will share the experiences of towns and cities and how these have managed to capitalise on the opportunities provided by their historic urban areas.

Around 40 speakers are expected to make presentations at the conference.

The regeneration process poses a number of challenges and opportunities which are common to many towns and cities.

The appropriate re-use of historic buildings, the economic viability of regeneration projects, transport systems and tourism are among the issues expected to be raised at the three-day conference.

The programme includes a presentation and public debate on the regeneration of historic urban cores in Malta.

Foreign experts will provide feedback durign this session to be held on April 14.
