J. A. Mizzi's letter (December 23) and suggestion that Wg Cdr A. Warburton should be re-interred in Malta deserves support from all aviation enthusiasts and WWII historians.
Quite a large number of articles depicting Wg. Cdr Warburton's feats and achievements in connection with photographic reconnaissance, which was his speciality, have been published.
In Tony Spooner's biographical book 'Warburton's War' he gathered all the citations to Warby's awards.
When one reads this book it will easily be seen that all of them resulted from operations carried out from Malta. Little did Mr Spooner have in mind, when he finished his book, that this tragic episode - finding Warby and his plane - would happen. To summarise, these were the awards: D.F.C. and Two Bars; D.S.O. and One Bar; and the American D.F.C. And finally two letters of appreciation from General Alexander and another letter from Air Marshal A. Coningham, AOC, Northwest African Tactical Air Force.
For the sake of those persons who collect medals, I need say no more, but for those who do not, I will just point out that the DSO (Distinguished Service Order) is the next highest decoration after the Victoria Cross. There were very strong rumours at the time among RAF personnel, that Warby was being recommended for the award of a VC.
Had such an award materialised, I would have been as happy as the recipient himself.
