Last Saturday, more matches from the Malta Handball Association competitions were played at the University Sports Complex.

Wild Angels Vitality maintained their perfect record at the start of the second round of the ladies' National League. At the end of the first round of the men's championship, Aloysians lead the way on seven points.

Ladies' League

Wild Angels Vitality 19
University 4

John Falzon's Wild Angels Vitality secured their fourth consecutive win to maintain their 100 per cent record as they now lead the standings on 12 points.

However, it was far from plain sailing during the first period as University, managed by Stephan Vancell, did not give away an inch. By half-time they were only trailing their more-quoted opponents by five points.

On resumption, Wild Angels looked a transformed side as they moved up a couple of gears to sweep past their opponents. At the end, it was a merited victory for Wild Angels. Maria Falzon was their top scorer with six goals.

University's goals were scored by Davida Degiorgio, Jenny Mizzi, Rosette Mattocks and Daniela Bezzina.

Player of the match: Yvonne Barry (Wild Angels Vitality).

Standings: WA Vitality 12; Kavallieri; Aloysians 4; University 0.

Men's championship

La Salle Nespak 26
University 18

A determined La Salle took full points from this encounter to complete their first round commitments in second place behind Aloysians.

Alan Grima's La Salle got off to a good start but as time went by, University got more into the thick of the action, even managing to equalise.

However, towards the end of the first half, they were very unlucky to lose the services of utility player Dennis Zammit following an injury.

During the first minutes of the second half, University did keep the pace with the score tied at 12-12. But, in a space of few minutes La Salle moved ahead 19-12. University toiled to get back into the game but the match had already been won and lost.

Chris Kenely was La Salle's top scorer on nine goals.

Player of the match: Andrew Said (La Salle Nespak).

Kavallieri 24
Aloysians Prominent 28

Despite having a number of regular players missing, Aloysians were still strong enough to overcome the challenge offered by Kavallieri to strengthen their leadership at the end of the first round with seven points.

Kavallieri, once again, showed they have true quality players. However, the team seems to lack that tinge of aggressiveness which many times decides the outcome of any sporting contest.

During the first period, Aloysians started piling up the pressure but following a rather weak start Kavallieri hit back to level terms. At the break, however, Aloysians were still enjoying a four-goal lead - 12-8.

Play resumed with balanced attacks from both sides. But, as time was running out, Kavallieri could not find their way past their opponents who stayed calm and maintained their four-goal cushion to end up worthy winners.

Player of the match: Milos Stanislejevic (Aloysians Prominent).

Standings: Aloysians Prominent 7; La Salle Nespak 4; Kavallieri, University 3.

Boys U-16 league standings

La Salle Danone 9; La Salle B, Aloysians, St Martin's Cavalliers 3; University 0.
