The body of a 23-year old man from Pembroke was yesterday recovered from the sea at Dwejra, in Gozo, the Armed Forces of Malta said.

The man, a sports diver was reported missing at about 6.40 p.m. by a woman who was accompanying him on a dinghy while he was diving close to il-Gebla tal-General.

As soon as the armed forces were notified, an AFM Allouette Helicopter with two rescuers on board from Luqa and a dinghy with two divers from the Explosives Ordnance Depot on Manoel Island were dispatched to Dwejra.

A search was conducted in the area and the man's body was recovered from a depth of about 30 metres. The corpse was handed over to the Gozo district police.

The search and rescue operation was directed by Captain Wallace Camilleri. Magistrate Paul Coppini conducted an inquiry.
