Five Maltese sailors - members of the Laser Class team currently training for the 2003 Small Nations Games in Malta - recently participated in a top-level training camp on Lago di Garda, Italy.

The Maltese sailors selected for this event, held between June 10 and 16, were Mario Aquilina, Neil Borg, Alfred Fenech, Warren Muscat and Peter Valentino.

The camp was supervised by Italian coach Manfredo Audisio. Present at the training camp were members of the Italian national Laser Standard team, led by Diego Negri, as well as a number of Laser Radial sailors including the present Italian national champion. Their participation ensured that the Maltese sailors trained with some of the best competitors in the class.

At the end of the camp, Audisio invited Maltese sailor Valentino to a second training camp, organised by the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV). The camp, staged in Naples, was intended for the Italian Laser Radial team preparing for this year's Laser world championships.

The Maltese sailors' participation in the Lago di Garda camp was made possible thanks to an agreement between the Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Italiano (CONI) and the Malta Olympic Committee.
