As part of KPMG in Malta’s continuous expansion of service offerings and in line with its existing cross-functional portfolio in the distributed ledger technology (DLT) space, it has been formally approved as systems auditor by the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA).

Drawing upon the strengths of a diversified yet unified team specialising in areas ranging from cryptocurrency audits, VFA advisory services, company setup and tax assistance among others, KPMG will perform systems audits, involving both local and international subject matter experts in its delivery, in line with the MDIA’s guidelines.

The offering complements KPMG in Malta’s drive within the emerging technology space with major investments such as the acquisition of KPMG Crimsonwing and setup of KPMG Software, while also ramping up on its more ‘traditional’ service lines of IT advisory and IT audit.

Systems audits also have specialist elements such as code reviews and software testing

Commenting on the formal approval by the MDIA, Claude Ellul, audit director at KPMG in Malta, said: “We have been keeping a close eye and participating in developments in this industry ever since the announcements were made across multiple fronts, so it was only logical that we bring together expertise that KPMG built over the years in different areas into one team to be able to become recognised systems auditors by the MDIA.”

Chris Azzopardi, head of IT in external audit at KPMG in Malta, explained further: “DLTs and blockchain bring about a number of opportunities for businesses when managed well. Even with changing technological dimensions, clients get access to a network of knowledge and experience through a single point of entry that makes KPMG so unique.”

Systems audits also have specialist elements such as code reviews and software testing. In this regard Matthew Scerri, senior manager at KPMG Software, said: “It sometimes comes as a surprise that a firm such as KPMG has a strong software development department focusing on emerging tech. Indeed, we have had a team working on the development of tools to help our audit professionals from across the network transition and take advantage of DLTs for quite a while already. Ultimately all of this is experience and expertise that will enable us to work hand in hand with our clients and other subject matter experts to assist them in carrying out these specialised elements of these systems audits.” KPMG’s range of professionals, both locally and internationally, position it to be able to deliver systems audits effectively and efficiently.
