Around 180 dilapidated apartments in Valletta are to be patched up, fixed or repurposed as housing for senior citizens or disadvantaged families.

Money for the works comes in part from EU regional development funds, with the project forming part of a larger €24m project for the area, authorities said. The Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation will be carrying out the works.

The entire project will involve restoring facades and common areas of four blocks of apartments on Triq Mattia Preti; restoring a block on Carmel Street to use as social housing; improving accessibility on Triq Zekka and fixing other old blocks in the area for them to be used by elderly couples.

Plans for the area were announced by Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi, social housing parliamentary secretary Roderick Galdes and EU Funds parliamentary secretary Aaron Farrugia, during a visit the three politicians paid to the area.

Once works have been completed, the Housing Authority will be handed keys to blocks which will be used as social housing.
