Vegetables to be testedfor pesticide residue

The Board of Standards is soon to start testing vegetables to establish the level of residue from pesticides, Food, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Lawrence Gatt said yesterday.

Mr Gatt was speaking at a poorly-attended public forum held by the Consumers’ Union to discuss the Bill for Consumer Protection. He said a lot of amendments were to be made to the Bill.

One of these amendments was to protect the media and other bodies which made public the names of companies who did not give a good service to consumers.

The minister expressed disappointment at the “lack of response by individuals to the two White Papers and the law which had been published”.

The Maltese Cross in Biafra and Vietnam

The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Malta, once famed for its military skill, is today actively fighting hunger, distress and disease.

This activity, currently centred in Biafra and Vietnam, is given through the Order’s “International Aid for Assistance to the Missions and for the Fight against Hunger, Disease and Ignorance in the World”.

This organisation is known more simply as the ALOM International Aid Order of Malta.

The French Association of the Order of Malta together with other world organisations, was recently responsible for the evacuation of a large number of children in Gabun and Ivory Coast.

Late last year, 30 tons of food and medicine were sent to Libreville and were distributed to the needy by the Order’s assisance groups.

Together with the French Red Cross, 30 French volunteers are working on various missions in Biafra, taking care of the evacuation of children to special centres. On one occasion, the Biafra volunteers were responsible for the distribution of blood collected in France by the French Association of the Order of Malta.
