I was astonished when reading that Reinhard Grindel was found to have accepted a €6,000-watch as a gift from Hryhoriy Surkis, a Uefa vice president (‘German FA chief Grindel quits over watch gift’, April 3).

I believe what Grindel said, that he accepted the gift out of politeness, knowing that watches similar to the one he was given sell like hot cheesecakes.

Had Grindel asked for the expensive watch in return for a favour, then he would be guilty of deceiving people, therefore committing fraud, but it was not the case.
