The foremost achievement President George Vella aspires for is to unify the people and he has all it takes to be true to his word. The basis of all his qualities is his authenticity. This was confirmed by his son, George, on Xarabank when he referred to the President’s speech saying it precisely reflects who his father truly is.

Bro. Edward, who at the age of 94 years was proudly present at the inauguration Mass, the swearing-in ceremony and the reception in honour of the new President, who was one of his students, equally spoke highly of the speech and believes in its implementation for the benefit of the common good.

Bro. Edward thanked the new President for making De La Salle College proud. In turn, the President acknowledged the vital role of the college in educating students for life after having had a sense of values initially instilled by the family.

This unpretentious personality is already capturing the hearts of the people and already putting into practice his vision through the inter-religious aspect of the inaugural Mass and his unifying attitude in his public appearances, interviews and otherwise.

The Archbishop – welcoming him as a symbol of national unity –  expressed his trust in him to defend Malta’s heritage in every sense and to promote all that is good and beautiful among us.

As the editorial of the Times of Malta, ‘Long live the President’, recently said: “Dr Vella enjoys respect across the political divide and his stand on very delicate issues within the Labour Party in which he was active for so long is an open secret. The country puts its whole trust in him.”

Concluding the Net TV 10Q interview on his vision for this country – which includes the decision to serve the people by promoting Malta’s values and a fair distribution of wealth – the new President said: “All this can materialise with the help of God and that of each one of us.”

The President is already leading by example. In the words of Pope Francis on this special occasion: “May God bless him with the gifts of wisdom, understanding and fortitude.”

Malta is proud of him.
