Police probe fresh claims of corruption in football
The Malta Football Association has received a number of new anonymous letters over the past couple of weeks alleging bribery and match-fixing, which are being looked into by the police in their ongoing investigations.
MFA vice-president Peter Fenech said four or five new letters had surfaced recently, adding to a number of others that the association had received over the past few months.
Police mark murder of an exemplary colleague
The police last Friday marked the 10th anniversary of the death of Constable Mark Farrugia, who was gunned down by a colleague in a senseless revenge over a traffic report.
Mr Farrugia, 21, had returned to his parents’ house in Tarxien, from his night shift at the police station in Paola. He was shot in the back from a passing car. The court found Constable Etienne Carter, guilty of his murder and sentenced him to 22 years in prison. The victim had reported his colleague for driving a car without insurance. Police Commissioner John Rizzo, who investigated the murder, said Mr Farrugia meant a lot to him and to the force.

GRTU warning over VAT
The GRTU, Association of General Retailers and Traders, yesterday threatened action if the conditions of the proposed Value Added Tax are not “right”. GRTU president Carlo Cini told a meeting on Monday night that they will not support the government’s attempts to impose the new tax “if it is found to be detrimental to retailers and other small and medium-sized businesses. If the conditions are right we will cooperate, if the terms are bad we will mobilise the retailers against VAT,” Mr Cini said. He did not say what the mobilisation would involve.
Six caught illegally hunting
The police, accused by the Malta Ornithological Society of being incompetent in enforcing the new bird hunting regulations, said yesterday six persons are to be arraigned in court for illegal hunting or trapping.

Strike at MMU is over
The Government Section of the General Workers’ Union told MMU employees yesterday to return to work as from 7am today. The section “suspended” the 16-day-old strike, involving some 450 employees, after government assurances that outstanding claims will be settled.
An MMU spokesman said yesterday that there might be one distribution of milk this afternoon. It was not possible to distribute milk as from this morning as all the processing equipment had to be sterilised.
It is estimated that over £56,000 worth of raw milk, supplied by producers to the MMU, was lost during the strike.
Joinery works strike ends
Agreement has been reached between the Port and Industries Section and the Grech and Zammit Joinery Works, of Marsa, for the firm’s workers to return to work after a strike lasting over a month.
A meeting for the workers is being held at the Workers’ Memorial Building tomorrow art 5.15pm to give details of the agreement.
The strike at the Grech and Zammit Joinery Works began on February 19 over negotiations on a collective agreement with the management.
