Italian Design Day, an initiative by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will be held on Wednesday at 11.30am at Mcast’s Institute of Applied Sciences in Paola, open only to students and academics, and at 6.30pm at the Italian Cultural Institute at St George’s Square, Valletta, open to the public.

Themed ‘Design and the city of the future’, the objective is to demonstrate how design can be applied to a complex product such as the contemporary city.

Michael Vernon Robinson, CEO and design director of ED Design in Turin, will be giving a presentation on ‘Italian car design 2030’. A highly creative designer and well-known futurist with a thirst for advanced research, his design teams have produced cars, yachts, helicopters and trains.

Malcolm Caligari Conti, lecturer at the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Mcast, will be talking about ‘The car in the city of the future’. Having graduated as a mechanical engineer from the University of Malta in 2011, he then went on to read for a PhD in biomaterials engineering.

The event will also feature the screening of Driving Dreams, a docu-film by Gianluca Migliarotti dedicated to the men who conceived some of the most remarkable and visionary car designs of the 20th century.

A Fiat 500A Topolino (1936), a Fiat 500C Belvedere (1952), an Alfa Romeo Spider (1975), courtesy of Richard Zahra and Carlo Zampa, and an Alfa Romeo Giulia (2018), courtesy of Motors Inc., will be on display at the Mcast main campus and at St George’s Square.

The event  for students and academics will be held at 11.30am in the auditorium of the Institute of Applied Sciences, Main Campus, Mcast, Paola. Another event open to the public will be held at 6.30pm at the Italian Cultural Institute, St George’s Square, Valletta.
