An Italian ‘hypercar’ that runs on electricity is staking a claim to be the fastest street-legal vehicle in the world.

The Pininfarina Battista, unveiled at the Geneva International Motorshow on Tuesday, is faster than a Formula 1 car and can reach 100km per hour in less than two seconds. It will reach top speeds of around 328km per hour.

The car, which is expected to cost around €2 million when it goes into production, has an electric motor in each wheel and a power output equivalent of 1,900 horsepower.

It will be powered by a 120 kilowatt-hour T-shaped battery pack which manufacturers say will give the car a 300km range, though that is likely to be an optimistic estimate for those keen to shift the car through its gears.

The Battista will go into limited production in 2020, with just 150 of them made – 50 each for Europe, Asia and North America.
