Palumbo Group has just invested €6 million in a 50,000 square metre ship platform in Ancona that will give its shipyard in Malta a competitive edge in the area of ship repair in the Mediterranean.

With 10 piers and a 560-ton travel lift, Palumbo Superyachts Ancona can accommodate ships up to 100 metres in length with its new syncrolift, which will be inaugurated during the launch of the Columbus 80m Dragon – the group’s largest new-build yacht project to date – scheduled for mid-March.

Palumbo Malta Shipyards president Antonio Palumbo said: “Malta is a big shipyard and we have to work hard in this volatile market to remain attractive and provide clients with the best options in the Mediterranean.

“As an international group we are constantly striving to create a synergy between all our facilities across our eight shipyards to optimise the services we provide in the area of ship repair, maintenance activities and the construction of luxury boats.”

The syncrolift in Ancona will be able to take in superyachts weighing up to 3,300 tons using 14 large winches to raise vessels with drafts of up to six metres below the waterline.

This investment follows on the group’s latest introduction of a 420-ton boat lift at its Palumbo SY yard in Cottonera that cost €2.5m and will attract more business to the island from superyachts seeking repair and refitting in the winter months, Palumbo said in a statement.

Last year was a good one for Palumbo Malta, which succeeded in completing 201 projects at the shipyard – including the refitting of six cruise liners – and another 52 superyachts, reaching a total of 253 projects.
