A passenger landing on a flight from Dubai was arrested on Sunday after some two kilos of cocaine were found in his luggage during a spot check at the Malta International Airport.

Brazilian national Adalberto Alves da Silva, 39, was marched to court early on Monday morning and charged with the importation and possession of the drug under circumstances indicating that it was not for his personal use.

The court, presided over by magistrate Ian Farrugia, heard how the man had just landed on a flight from Dubai via Larnaca at around 2pm on Sunday when he was stopped by immigration officers who discovered the suspected drug in his possession during routine checks.

The prosecution requested the court to issue a freezing order upon all the man’s assets.

During the arraignment, the man pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody.

Inspector Jonathan Cassar prosecuted. Lawyer Martin Fenech was legal aid counsel.
