Off to Gaza with 60 boxes... and a lot of hope
Sanaa El-Nahhal yesterday embarked on a philanthropic mission to her war-torn homeland, the Gaza Strip, armed with 850 kilograms of supplies for her family and other Palestinians and a mind packed with mixed emotions.
About to board the afternoon EgyptAir flight to Cairo, Ms El-Nahhal found it hard to put her finger on the conflicting thoughts that raced through her mind. It was all a major “question mark” at that point. “I am happy to be helping my family but sad they have reached this point. I am happy I am going to see them but sad to see them in this state.”
The 40-year-old, who has been living in Malta since 1989, should be greeted on landing by relatives – her family has been literally split down the middle, with half living in Egypt and the other in the Gaza Strip, where the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been raging.
GRTU directs members to pay part of utility bills
The Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises – GRTU yesterday instructed small businesses to pay only part of their electricity bills, a directive likely to hit Enemalta’s cash flow.

National concern at mounting wave of vandalism
Concern was mounting throughout Malta yesterday at the increasing gravity of acts of vandalism when medieval Mdina, the jewel in Malta’s tourism crown, became the target of spray painters. “Where will it stop?” people were wondering as they looked down with disgust at paint scrawls on palaces and monuments in the historic old capital.
Mdina fell prey to the vandals on Monday night. Fluorescent paint was sprayed on the walls of museums, palaces, private residences and monuments and the scars bound to be left on aged stone as the paint is removed wil take years to fade into insignificance.
No one is laying the blame on anyone in particular but practically everyone sees hunters with smoking guns in their hand.
Police given new powers to crack down on drug dealers
Tough new powers are set to be given to police in a bid to crack down on drug dealers, Upper Lyceum students were told yesterday.
Students packed the school entrance hall and stairs to take part in a forum they had called on State action against drugs.

£100 stolen from safe
The Amalgamated Engineering Co. Ltd, at Timber Wharf, Marsa, was burgled during Friday-Saturday night. Some £100 in cash was taken from the company’s safe. Mr J. V. Toledo, manager at the Marsa Co.’s Branch was informed of the theft by the police who found the door forced open at about 4.15am.
It is understood that the burglar or burglars used the company’s equipment to burn the safe open. Magistrate on duty Dr C. Schembri held an inquiry on the spot yesterday morning.
Car hits woman
Antonia Sacco of Birkirkara was hit by a car driven by Kenneth Robert Brown of St Paul’s Bay while she was crossing Naxxar Road on Friday. Sacco was taken to hospital and kept for further treatment but is not in danger of losing her life.
Students’ end of course
Some 30 students of the Msida Catering School were guests at a passing-out luncheon at the school on Friday on conclusion of their course. A clever display of conjuring was given by Philip the Magician (Philip Sammut). Certificates will be presented to the students tomorrow.
