In the feature entitled ‘Study on future of 1842 prison’ (January 1), it was was reported that the planned upgrading of the Corradino prison complex in Paola would entail “either redesigning or actually demolishing and rebuilding part or all of the prison”.

I earnestly hope that, in the envisaged general overhaul of this place, one would also include the unique penitentiary chapel dedicated to Christ Our Saviour, which features two rare works by Maltese artist Enrico Casolani (1817-1885). These are the apse fresco behind the main altar depicting ‘Christ Blessing the World’ and a large ‘Transfiguration’ oil painting on canvas at the far end of the nave which, along with several other church artefacts are in a poor state of conservation.

This is a golden opportunity to safeguard them for posterity. Indeed, this is a clarion call for the entire chapel’s restoration and a subsequent detailed evaluation by specialists.
