Unfortunately, it appears that a number of high-ranking Nationalist Party officials now realise (inwardly) they have backed the wrong horse for the party leadership. Good judgement and righteousness are considered to be vital attributes in an honourable politician but, regrettably, there appears to be a deficiency of these values within the PN ranks.

The party is wallowing in the doldrums and it seems intent on self-destruction; unless those same officials decide to do away with pique and attempt to find a unifying solution to the party leadership with the aim of reinvigorating the past values of the PN that have enabled it to write Malta’s golden history pages through the acquisition of independence (photo), membership of the European Union and the adoption of the euro currency.

The country needs a strong PN to provide an effective Opposition to the government, holding it accountable to the people. This is achieved not by imitating the populism of the Labour Party but by being distinct and strong in the PN’s traditional values.

Perhaps the grandees who have honoured the party in the past should be entrusted with such a mission, which is becoming vital for the continued existence of the PN.
