STEM camps offer students an enjoyable opportunity to learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The first such camps during the current scholastic year are targeting Year 7 (Form 1) students and being held at Esplora Interactive Science Centre in Bighi.

The first participants were from St Nicholas College Middle School, Rabat. They interacted with the various exhibits at Esplora, working out practical, hands-on tasks related to learning outcomes in integrated science, maths and English. During their visit, they also attended a science workshop or planetarium show.

The STEM camps are being coordinated by the Education Ministry’s Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programmes and aim to promote scientific literacy while nurturing students’ critical thinking, life, career and innovative future skills, necessary to equip them for active citizenship and employability.

HSBC Malta Foundation is sponsoring this year’s camps as part of the bank’s Future Skills employability strategy. HSBC Malta Corporate Sustainability Manager Glenn Bugeja said the strategy supports educational initiatives that foster students’ skills to match the needs of the labour market. HSBC is also supporting the publishing of the STEM camps workbook being distributed to all students participating in the camps during current scholastic year.
