The various projects and initiatives held in Malta under Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) programmes run by the international Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) were showcased last week at the three-day FEE Fest at San Ġorġ Preca College Middle School, Blata l-Bajda.

The event, which included exhibition stalls and scheduled sessions, enabled visitors not only to obtain information about various sustainable projects and initiatives but also to develop ideas for cross-curricular work and networking.

The FEE’s ESD programmes have been conducted for the past 16 years in various schools and other entities in Malta in collaboration with Nature Trust-FEE Malta. These include the flagship Eco-Schools programme, known locally as EkoSkola, as well as the Learning About Forests (LEAF) and Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE).

Nature Trust – FEE Malta seeks partnerships with various entities…

Nature Trust – FEE Malta seeks partnerships with various entities and participates in various local and international ESD initiatives to further equip children with ESD skills and competences to help them develop into informed, active and responsible citizens.

The Litterless Campaign which is run jointly by Wrigley Company Foundation and FEE through the YRE programme, is one such initiative.

The Water Explorer programme managed by Global Action Plan UK, run locally by Nature Trust – FEE Malta through its Eco-Schools programme and supported by the HSBC Malta Foundation, is another great opportunity for local schools. Both projects are fast becoming popular and will run for the second year running. A number of participating schools will also be receiving support funding to execute their action plans.

Other interesting opportunities include the Tree Your Town – School Community link Project run through the LEAF programme in collaboration with the Environment Ministry; Promoting Sustainable Mobility Choices, run in collaboration with Transport Malta’s Sustainable Mobility Unit; and Curbing the Use of Single Use Plastics, run in collaboration with Eco Gozo and the Gozo Ministry.
