Tamara Proschek recently obtained an MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Portsmouth’s Institute of Criminal Justice Studies.

Her dissertation, entitled ‘The Moral and Legal Responsibility of Mentally Ill Offenders’, discussed and critically evaluated philosophical, and on a larger scale, legal and psychological/psychiatric approaches to the responsibility of mentally ill offenders.

She commented: “My objective was to delve into the nature of mentally ill individuals and to critically explore the previous literature on discussions of their responsibility in the eyes of the law.

After briefly reviewing theories of moral responsibility, Ms Proschek went on to explore the concept of legal insanity and the responsibility or lack thereof applied to mentally ill individuals.

She then conducted an in-depth look into particular mental illnesses and past cases to help develop a discussion on whether such individuals should or should not have been considered responsible or accountable for the crimes they were prosecuted for.
