Pupils and students from St Joseph’s Mater Boni Consilii school, Paola, recently marked Children’s Day in Valletta and San Anton Gardens, Attard, by taking part in gamified education activities using the Finnish online platform ‘Seppo – Spark for Learning’.

The Seppo games enabled the students to explore the gardens and learn about historical monuments and buildings in Valletta in a different and stimulating way, incorporating subjects such as History, Maltese, English and Italian.

Through the platform, pupils were also able to ask questions to the teachers leading the games and for the latter to answer them live.Through the platform, pupils were also able to ask questions to the teachers leading the games and for the latter to answer them live.

During the activity, they used different forms of media, recording sounds, taking pictures, filming interviews and talking to tourists about their country. Through the platform they were also able to ask questions to the teachers leading the games and for the latter to answer them live.

Seppo believes in “creating a new kind of pedagogy that combines social learning and versatile ways of using mobile technology” that allows students to enjoy educational experiences while making use of skills such as teamwork, media usage and cultural acquisition.

St Joseph’s Mater Boni Consilii school is able to use the platform thanks to an agreement reached last May between its headmaster Dr Kenneth Vella and Seppo CEO Riku Alkio. During the summer, teachers from the school were trained by Alkio and teacher trainer Santeri Jaakkola at Seppo’s headquarters in Tampere, Finland, on how to use the system.

The gamified education activities at San Anton Gardens and Valletta were prepared by primary teachers Stephanie Saliba and Sara Schembri and secondary school teachers Julie Tabone Valetta, Cristina Spiteri and Elisa Saliba, with the assistance of Nathalie Lombardi Calleja and Roberta Trapani Maggi, digital literacy support teachers at the Secretariat for Catholic Education.
