Rabat seems to be the next target for speculators to ravage, Partit Demokratiku warned, after reports that two hotels were planned for Saqqajja Hill and the town's square.

Times of Malta recently reported residents’ ire for plans on two picturesque townhouses on Rabat’s Saqqajja Hill to become four-storey boutique hotels.

Partit Demokratiku said it will be objecting to both developments, calling for partisan divides to be set aside in defence of heritage and the environment.

"Rabat is under threat from recent applications that are turning the village core into a slew of restaurants and entertainment venues with utter disregard to the physical and social milieu of the village," the party said in a statement.

The party reiterated its calls to create a national masterplan that would look into economic growth without "sacrificing the quality of life of our citizens or the long-term health of our economy".

The party also raised its concerns for a proposed 1,200 vehicle car park, belvedere and road widening project, eating away into the picturesque valley in Għeriexem.

The proposed development threatens the physical beauty of Wied Ġnien Ħira and is just a stone’s throw away from the Domus Romana, Partit Demokratiku said.
