The government is studying ways how Maltese living abroad who are eligible to vote may vote in Malta's embassies, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said in Parliament on Monday.

He was replying to a parliamentary question by Jason Azzopardi (PN) but gave no further details.

No Maltese are currently able to vote abroad, but the government offers flights at subsidised rates for voters to come to Malta to cast their ballot.

1,717 voters living abroad, mostly in Brussels and the United Kingdom, used the scheme under which they were offered flights at €90 for the last general election.

According to a report published by the Electoral Commission, the bill for the subsidised flights was €1.75 million.

Meanwhile, trials started last week at Naxxar counting hall on an electronic vote-counting system. The system is expected to be introduced for the elections to the European Parliament and for local councils, next year.
